Review of the application "Biblia Latinoamericana Católica"

The Pastoral Edition of the Biblia Latinoamericana, also known as the Latin American Bible, is a Catholic translation of the Bible into Spanish. It was translated in Chile by a team led by priests Bernardo Hurault and Ramón Ricciardi.

Bernardo Hurault began writing it in Chile in 1960. The translation was made from ancient Hebrew and Koine Greek. During its preparation, Hurault included his own homilies and questions raised in his congregation in the version. It was published in 1972. Subsequently, new editions have been made that have corrected the biblical text, footnotes, and introductions.

The version uses large letters for all the texts of the New Testament and for a third of the Old Testament. The rest of the Old Testament text is printed with smaller letters. Old Testament citations that appear in the New Testament are marked with italics.

In the Biblia Latinoamericana, the Book of Ecclesiasticus is called Sirach. The Pauline epistles and the epistles of the other apostles are called Letters.

The order of the books in the New Testament is the same as that in the Catholic biblical canon. As for the order of the books in the Old Testament, the Biblia Latinoamericana adopted that of the Hebrew Bible: Torah, Nevi'im (Prophets), and Ketuvim (Writings). The exceptions to the order of the Hebrew Bible are:

• The placement of the books of Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Chronicles, and Macabees within the Nevi'im, according to the order of the Greek Bible.
• The placement of the deuterocanonical books of Tobit, Judith, Baruch, Wisdom, and Sirach within the Ketuvim, after the oldest wisdom writings.
• The book of Psalms is placed last in the Old Testament.

The Biblia Latinoamericana is a revision of the Biblia Latinoamericana made in 2004. It was published by the Spanish publishers San Pablo and Verbo Divino. The imprimatur was given on May 3, 2004, by the Honduran Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga and the bishop of Comayagua Roberto Camilleri Azzopardi. It has a large print edition, a pocket-sized edition, and an edition called "Formadores" for Catholic leaders.

Since its first publication, the Biblia Latinoamericana has received both positive and negative comments. Negative criticisms are based on the fact that the text, footnotes, and introductions of the early versions of the translation were influenced by liberation theology.

On October 30, 1976, a Declaration was issued on the so-called "Biblia Latinoamérica" by the Argentine Episcopal Conference (CEA). The CEA considered that the text and translation of the Biblia Latinoamericana "are substantially faithful, despite some objections that could be made." However, the CEA saw that several of the footnotes and introductions were "ambiguous, not without dangers, and some, especially those referring to the Church, due to their misleading nature, are certainly unacceptable."

In 1977, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith concluded that the Biblia Latinoamericana was faithful in translating the original texts but that its footnotes and introductions presented inaccuracies and ambiguities that had to be eliminated or clarified by the Hierarchy of the Church in Argentina. Some photos had to be removed because they were considered biased.
